TY Food Appeal

October 22, 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians,

A group of Transition Year students are collecting food this week for the soup kitchen “Friends helping Friends.  Twice a week, the soup kitchen sets up a stand across from Trinity College and they serve hot meals and drinks to some of the poorest people in Dublin. Any food we collect will be used to make these meals.

Unfortunately, the number of homeless people in Ireland continues to rise. According to Focus Ireland, the most recent figures indicate that there are 12,691 homeless people in the country. When we did this project last year, the figure was 10,805 while in 2021, it was 8,830.  In addition to feeding homeless people, the soup kitchen is witnessing an increase in the number of people who do have homes, but who live in food poverty (i.e. they cannot afford to buy food) turning up looking for a hot meal.

The Transition Year team is asking students and parents to donate non-perishable food.  If everyone brought in one item each, we could donate over 1,200 pieces of food from the school. This includes items such as pasta, teabags, tinned foods, biscuits, crisps, and sauces etc. All donations can be dropped into Ms. Timlin in Room 224. Many thanks for your support.
